The Ultimate Dress

Every girl dreams of her wedding dress...atleast every normal girl. Not me, I never was that kid. I just wanted to look fly going to brunches in my 30's.

And then it happened...September 12, I got engaged. You would think that I would have went into overload but I didn't. The chick over at Just Keep Kicking might tell you something different but I really didn't kick into Bridezilla mode.

I honestly have so much on my plate this fall between trying to graduate in December with a Master's in Education and putting Barack into office, I only did bits at a time. I am pretty precise when I know I want something.

Well, I finally decided to browse at some dresses. I wasn't really that excited to venture into bridal shops because I knew I would be overcome by all the blinding pasty white gowns that make you look like cup cakes. With this in mind, I just went on a limb and went by myself to look at dresses. I packed my trusty camera, some heels and my trusty girdle and off I went. No friends. No family. No peanut gallery.

I would watch all these wedding shows like Bridezilla, Platinum Weddings and Whose Wedding Is It Anyway. The brides would always say that you KNOW when you MEET your dress. I thought that was such a corny statment. I figured it wasn't as dramatic as they made it out to be.......................................

Until I FOUND MY DRESS. I promise you, I was not expecting it. I totally was cynical about the whole experience thinking I would breeze in and out completely disgusted by the cookie cutter look. That was until I found my dress. It just felt right.

I wish I could post pics, but I won't because a certain person lurks on this page...actually has seen the dress already. Yes, I broke tradition and let him see the dress! TSK TSK!

SAVE IT. I am so not a traditional person so it wasn't that big of a deal. Plus I looked like a wolf in the pic...no make up, etc...so he won't remember which one it is. But the point was that he is the one I want to impress so I feel he should have a say so. Quite honestly, he was indifferent to my choice but I also know that he is the type of person that needs to see something live and in color!

It's not the same. On that day...with the make-up, hair and nerves in place...I will be a new vision...I am sure of it. I BETTER BE!!

At any rate. I had the moment. I literally said aloud "THIS IS THE DRESS, THIS IS THE DRESS!"

I love it. I learned early on that I am a fan of rouching, mermaid style and a sweetheart neckline and all of those elements came together in this dress! I wish I could post it but I won't until after the wedding.

At any rate, there were several dresses that were atrocious and quite hilarious and I thought those pics would be way more interesting.

Judge me not...I had no make up and was totally bumming that day. None of these accentuated the flyness that is moi' so they didn't make the cut but they were worth blogging about in that I knew what to get.

Excuse the excess back and belly jelly...that will be taken care of by the time the wedding rolls around. I plan on being heavily addicted to crack by the wedding date to lose weight...it's the American way!

I kid. I kid...(have a sense of humor please!) In all honesty, I want to look like myself...just a better, more toned me!
NONE OF THESE WILL BE THE DRESS, ! NONE OF THEM! So feel FREE to giggle! I did!
(now let Operation Crackhead begin...Pray for me!)
By the way, David's Bridal sucks:(

Tar-Jay Chic

Everyone knows that I am an advocate of all things Target. Don't get me wrong, I still love a good shoe from Nordstrom and of course I am still a lover of boutiques like Melodrama in Houston and Anthropologie.

But I must be honest, I can't always afford to go to the boutiques on my shoe string budget. In a completely random yet slightly related note...Why did Japan just declare themselves in a recession?!? JAPAN!? If Japan has the Kahunas to call a spade a spade, why won't our outgoing President admit that the U.S. is in one.

Anyway, the point is...due to the economy, I have been frequenting Target a little more often these days...not that I mind actually. I find great pieces all the time.

At any rate, I thought I would post what I have been obsessed with lately. Lately, I am into nude colored shoes and tie neck tops. Here is a pic of something I wore to work last week courtesy of Target:) The top and sweater were from Target but the skirt and shoes were courtesy of Anne Klein. I thought I looked pretty cute...but that's just me:)

I have also noticed that my look has become quite conservative these days and has left me with very little "going out" options. I have been to a few parties/outings in the past month and have come to the realization that I don't have any cute evening clothes. I can't rock a cardigan to a club...not that I would go to one but I need atleast one cute sexy black dress. Pretty soon, if I am not careful, I will be rocking School bus Sweaters to parties!

That can't happen...I must up my game!

At any rate, the point is to check out Target from time to time and do a little mix and matching from time to time. Mix your high end pieces with inexpensive pieces and reinvent your look from time to time. I will say that over the past year, my look has been less bohemian and more conservative but I do still like to mix the two.
Update...I thought I would throw in this pic of a suit I wore today. It's one of my favorite suits from a few years ago (Banana Republic). Believe it or not, I wore this suit with my brown and pink Chuck Taylors because I am always running around the school these days! I threw on my trusty Tank from Target and a scarf for a headband. I rarely wear tennis shoes but lately I've been wanting comfort as I trot around that big school:) My students always love when I wear my Chuck Taylors for some reason...GO figure:)

MY WORDS EXACTLY:)

THIS SONG SUMS UP HOW I FEEL ABOUT PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA! I HAD TEARS IN MY EYES BY THE END OF THIS SONG! I WISH I TAUGHT GOVERMENT OR HISTORY RIGHT NOW! I AM STILL TRYING TO SOAK IT ALL IN! I CAN'T WAIT TO BE AT THE INAUGURATION IN JANUARY....(STILL LOOKING FOR SOME COMFY BUT FAB BOOTS:)NOW LET ME CONTINUE TO DANCE IN THE LIVING ROOM:)

In completely random news, I am officially endorsing this look for the holidays! I covet the whole suit from head to toe...and I will replicate...YES I WILL! .....

CONGRATULATE ME!

I VOTED FOR THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND HE WON!!

And he didn't just win by the skin of his teeth...He BLEW IT AWAY!!
YES WE CAN! YES HE DID! YES WE CAN! YES I DID!I can't quite put into words what I feel, so I won't even try. I need a few days to soak this all in!
I will say that as a teacher, I noticed something different about my students of color today. They walked with a straighter back and walked a little taller. I didn't have to know they were proud...I SAW IT! I FELT IT!

The first family looked great! Some people are questioning Michelle's dress but I was not offended by it. She basically wore her signature sheath dress but with a little couture thrown in the mix. It was a Narcisco Rodriguez dress from the Spring 09' collection. I liked it personally but some people were a little less enthused.

God willing, I am going to the inauguration so I must invest in some boots...cute but practical and comfortable. That will be my mission. If I don't make it there, rest assured I will be in my Obama gear in my living room on January 20, 2009!

This is not a political blog but this could not be avoided! I am SO proud to be alive during this time. Let's not make the mistake of making him into the next Messiah...He is a man and needs our support and prayers to clean up this mess that the current president is leaving him.

Enough politics, I need a few days to really soak this in...and to find some boots! Here are a few from Nine West.
Even if I don't get to the inauguration, I will be getting some boots in honor of our next president...kind of lame? I agree:)

If Malia and Sasha Obama are getting a new puppy to take to the White House, I can get some boots for putting them in there. I've got to get something out of this deal!
Oh wait...I might need to save my duckets...I have a feeling our current President is about to pull some stunts his last 75 days in office! Sleep with one eye open until January 20, 2009!
