A Gift and A Curse

One thing I've learned about myself over the years is that I always root for the underdog.

If an injustice happens in my presence, I immediately speak up.

If I see someone being treated poorly, I'm going to stand up and say something.

If I see someone being wronged or if I'm being wronged,

I will not take it.

It rubs me the wrong way.

I wasn't always that way.

I was very quiet as a kid.

I'm even quiet now, unless you know me.

I can spend an entire 24 hours completely silent and not care.

But the muzzle comes off if any level of respect is compromised in my presence.

It's who I am.

Some people love it, some people hate it, some people don't know what to do with it.

It makes some people uncomfortable.

Ruffles their feathers.

But sometimes, it's okay to be uncomfortable.

I'm open minded to a certain extent.

No one will convince me that clogs are cute but that doesn't mean I won't say that YOU look cute wearing them.

Just don't ask me to wear them, because I won't.

I'll try them on to amuse you.

But I'm probably throwing up in my mouth the whole time.

I'm obsessed with people's behavior.
I pay attention to patterns of behavior.

I'm looking even when you think I'm not.

I'm listening even when you're not saying a word.

I'm usually watching you, watch me.

I study people's body language.

I'm telling you, I believe people's postures and how they carry themselves sometimes speak loader than all the screaming one can do.

My minor was psychology in college...so that explains a lot.

Basically, I'm neurotic.

I know when someone is genuine.

I know when they are being fake.

Because I spend a lot of time watching and listening.

The flip side of that coin is that I have some things I constantly work on.

I'm not awesome at forgiveness.

I'm not awesome at forgiving or forgetting.

I remember everything someone does to me...good or bad.

Not much goes over my head even though I will let you believe that most times.

I keep track of untruths.

I keep track of apologies.

I also have a hard time operating in chaos.

It throws me off.

I remember I used to spend summers with an aunt and she yelled alot.

Not because she was mad.

But because yelling is what she did.

Even if she was yelling for someone to take out the garbage, she was yelling it to the top of her lungs.

I would get headaches.

I would beg to go home on the weekends so I could get some peace and quiet.

I still get headaches if there is a lot of chaos going on.

I'm much more zen than my wardrobe reflects.

So, I'm going to spend 2012 trying to be more tolerant.

Still watching.

Still side eyeing.

Still hugging.

Still loving.

Still standing up for myself and others who can't.

But much more tolerant of people who don't abide by the same code.

Right after, a Nicki Minaj song came on...and just like that the holidays were over.

Christ Chic: Moments Like These

The hubby just returned from a business trip to Scotland.

He shared the story of one of his coworkers and the story was just too moving for me not to share with you.

His coworker was a self proclaimed agnostic.

(Stating facts...no judgement here:)

The coworker, let's call him Peter, told the hubby that he had an important event when they returned to Houston.

(Goodwill Dress, Steve Madden Heels, Zara Trench)

He was going to have his 1st Communion.

The hubby laughed it off (insert my fist) until he realized that Peter was serious.

Apparently, Peter went to Rome last year and of course he had to visit the Vatican.

I know I would.

Peter said he walked into the Vatican and for reasons unknown to him...he fell to his knees.

He said he didn't expect it.

He later recalls the moment as God literally knocking him in the head.

Today, Peter is enjoying his First Communion.

I'm not Catholic.

And I'm not trying to convert you.

Really, the message is for me.

I went to church today and didn't get anything out of the message.

(That happens sometimes)

But the story of Peter, my hubby's coworker, moved my spirit.

The fact that he didn't believe...had no intentions on believing...and just like that, his whole world changed.

That's proof enough for me.

I'm sending a "1st Communion" card to Peter.

Something so miraculous deserves to be acknowledged.

What's with the turtleneck under a spring/summer dress, you ask?

It's my last ditch effort to wear one of my favorite dresses before Old Man Winter decides to show up.

What?

If people can wear socks with sandals (not judging...even tried it once)...then I can wear my favorite summer/spring dress:)

The Art Of The Wedding

Obviously, this is my blog but let me restate that these are MY opinions.

Everyone's experience may not have been the same as mine.

Weddings...DON'T FEED INTO THE HYPE.

If you're not into reading a long post, that's basically the message.

Don't feed into the big business of weddings.

It's a show.

A show for other people.

Alot of whom think they are entitled to the grandest performance of THEIR lifetime...and won't slip you a dime to pay for it.

I'm going to be brutally honest.

I enjoyed my wedding.

I actually had a blast.

But I did NOT enjoy every element of making it happen.

Quite honestly, I was in tears probably for a solid month before the wedding.

People were straight tripping.

At one point, I stopped taking calls from a few people for a while.

I'm not an overly emotional person but I am a witness... things/people will break you DOWN!

And it was not because I was a bridezilla.

I would tell you if I was...but I reallllly wasn't.

I just wanted the ceremony that we would both enjoy.

That might mean different things to different people.

For us, that meant a surprise laid back, cocktail affair.

For others, that means the bridesmaids, white doves, unity candle and the singing of Ave' Maria.

Things I've learned:

1. Weddings bring out the best/worst in people

2. People feel entitled to give you their opinion when you don't ask for it.

3. You really see who your true friends/family are during this process. REALLY!

4. People's willingness to help greatly depends on where they are in terms of their thoughts on "relationships/marriages." Example: If a person never had their own wedding a million years ago or just got recently divorced, their reaction to wedding details/planning/relevance MIGHT mirror those feelings.

5. PEOPLE are ALLERGIC to RSVP'ing! It drove me nuts (Truth... I've been guilty of it in the past...this wedding has changed me. I will RSVP in a heartbeat now!)
6. If people want to help you, they will. And you won't have to chase them down to do it.
7. People will enjoy your wedding experience if you stay true to who you both are.
Example: I'm not an outdoors-y girl so having an outdoor wedding would not have made sense.
8. Never underestimate the power of networking.
9. A low key wedding does not mean you have to sacrifice your vision or quality.
10. People will bring kids to your ADULT ONLY wedding even when you print it on the wedding invitation with GLITTER and even have direct conversations with them. People DO what they want to. But honestly, by the time the day arrives, and you're in the moment, you won't care. But that doesn't stop you from doing a double take or a quick side eye when you notice a baby crying in the background.

Things you should do.

1. Have a friend/family member with a camera to take snapshots the whole night. It will tide you over until you get your official pics come in.

2. Focus on things you love, not things you THINK you should have.

Example: I'm not into flowers, so I didn't have any. (Except my surprise bouqet from my friend.)

Example: I didn't have programs. Are they necessary? Do you really need to know the order of events? Relax and go with the flow or leave.

3. Write down your speech or a list of people whom you want to thank.

4. Allow your family/friends to help.

Example: A family friend made our wedding cake/cupcakes.

5. No matter your budget...YOU NEED an event planner/coordinator. Letting someone else handle the details will allow you to enjoy your day. Whether it is a hired professional or a cousin who is really loud and bossy...it's necessary.

6. Expect a person(s) whom you never would suspect to let you down. Whether it is a friend or a family member. It will happen.

7. Take note of the ones who go above and beyond the call of duty.

8. Consider venues that will allow you to bring outside catering/beverages/bar. It really does make a world of difference. We got so lucky with our venue. Think of the friends/family members who live in nice neighborhoods/apartment complexes who have access to clubhouses. You'd be amazed!

9. Think outside of the box for all things! I got my wedding dress off the rack at Dillard's for about $100.

10. Expect some drama on your wedding day. If you're lucky, you will never know about it. If you're drunk, you won't care about it. (I was neither unfortunately, so I caught wind of a few dramatic moments.)

Be sure to incorporate elements of your style as a couple in the details.

Example: Instead of a traditional guest book, we had our guests sign playing cards because we enjoy Scrabble Card Games.

Most importantly, only invite people whom you would miss if they didn't show up.

Invite a room full of people who genuinely love and support you...those are the people you want to feed and get drunk.

It really is about you and your spouse.

Everything and everybody else is so secondary.

Would I ever plan such an event again?

Only if I got paid to do so:)

My Wedding: The Details (Nathan Russell Photography)

When the guests arrived, they were immediately instructed by Eskay Entertainment (event planner gurus) to relax and enjoy the cocktails and music.

I really was going for the cocktail effect with the whole wedding. Mingling. Drinks. Music. Fun.

That was the goal.

Shanda Ferguson's artwork was the first thing everyone saw once they entered the building.

I can't tell you how much I cherish that portrait of us.

(It now sits in our living room)

We didn't do much to the venue itself. That was one of my requirements when looking for the perfect place. I wanted the venue to already be what I wanted.

I didn't want to go the reception hall with glittered marbles as center pieces.

I enlisted the help of my venue stylist/friend to add the small touches like the pillows and candles/candle holders.

We scouted pillows everywhere from Ross to Dillard's but most of the pillows came from my home.

(I'm somewhat obsessed with decorative pillows)

The guests enjoyed fruit/cheese and drinks for cocktail hour.

(The hubby made 10 gallons of our signature drink the night before...Sweet Tea Vodka)

Our AWESOME caterer Candie of Candie's Catering provided the five waves of food.

Everything from chicken skewers to bit sized meatloaf boats.

A family friend created our miniature cupcakes/cupcake shotglasses/wedding cake.

If you know anything about me then you know I'm a wedding cake aficianado.

I do NOT play around with my cake!

I was dead set against buying those corny guest books.

We decided to utilize our favorite past time of playing SLAM: Scrabble Cards as our guest book.

I typed a simple instruction sheet of what to do and framed the instructions.

It was fun going through the cards the next day to see the messages everyone wrote.

The guests received personalized bookmarks provided by blogger, Olive Paperie Custom Design and Stationery.

(Our entrance song: The Truth by India Arie')

The guests were instructed to arrive at 7pm to mingle/hang out.

We arrived at about 7:45pm and walked in the venue together.

We walked straight to the middle of the room where our pastor met us to conduct the surprise ceremony.

Prior to us entering, our immediate families were lined up. They thought they were lining up to take pictures.

(Remember, this was a surprise wedding, they thought we went to the courthouse to get married)

Then we got married:)

We took quick family photos outdoors with our immediate family.

That's when the first wave of food came for the guests.

I did NOT want them waiting for us to eat.

We took a quick picture next to Shanda's masterpiece!

(P.S. We never posed for the portrait, I just described to her what we were wearing and she hit the nail on the head!)

Isn't it perfect!?!

Pure genius.

Then the party began.

So....my 20ft tall brother decided to PLANK at my wedding!

He makes me so sick! LOL!

I'm pretty sure we were dancing to a Prince song.

(His choice, not mine.)

All in all, it was exactly what I wanted.

My Wedding: Nathan Russell Photography

Here is the wedding post that I promised you:) For the newbies on my site...I got married July 30th and I didn't have to sell a lung to pay for it.

These are my official wedding pics by the great NATE...I call him that...in my head:) I met Nathan and his fabulous wife Amy last year at a blogger event in Austin. I had no idea then that they would be a huge part of my wedding day.

Long story short...we had a non-traditional wedding. And by non-traditional...I mean it was a surprise to everyone. Most thought that we went to the courthouse and invited them to the wedding reception. That's what the invitation said atleast. Only a select few knew the truth. My own mother didn't even know.

Basically...we got married at our reception:)

We wanted to skip all of the wedding hype and focus on the things that mattered to me us the most.

The venue. My shoes. The pictures. The DJ. The cake. Fun. Never underestimate networking. That's the only reason we were able to pull this thing off. Matter of fact, I had just gotten the news that I was laid off when the countdown began for the wedding details to come together.

The truth is that the Hubby and I saw each other before the wedding/reception. We wanted it that way. We wanted to take as many pics before the wedding so that we can honor everyone's time.

That's where Nathan and Amy of Nathan Russell Photography come in. He and his ~~team~~ wife/business partner drove down from Austin the night before so that we could have enough time for pics.

We scheduled about 3 hours before the wedding to be picture time. Nathan was waiting in the lobby with my then fiance' to take pics in The Magnolia Hotel and surrounding downtown Houston area.

It was unpretentious. Relaxed. Fun. And just what we wanted. Nathan even shared cocktails with us as the time got closer to leave for the venue. Yes, we drank with our photographer before the wedding and enjoyed every bit of it.

By the time we got to the "surprise" wedding venue...let's just say we were all HAPPY!

These are the shots before the surprise wedding.

Nathan was more than accomodating and absolutely honored my every request! Professional and fun and doesn't shun those who choose to partake in pre-wedding jitters cocktails...that's what every photographer's profile should say.

I could not ask for anything more from Nathan and Amy.
I stressed that I didn't want stuffy pictures and that I didn't want to spend time taking pictures instead of enjoying our guest.
He did that just that. Took our pics organically and kept it moving.

Well, maybe we didn't quite do a shuffle...THIS Sunday...but the choir did sing a song that had both of us wanting to go the juke joint afterwards.

I think somebody held up a lighter like they were at a Prince concert.

If you follow GFS on twitter then you may recall that I haven't gone in any thrift shops in months.

The main reason is that I just haven't been up to it.

The other reason is because I was accumulating too many odds and ends.

I needed to stop before I became the next person on Hoarders.

This weekend, my buddy came in from out of town and the objective was to thrift.

And I hit the jackpot...if bowties are considered hitting the jackpot.

For me, it was like hitting the lottery because the hubby rocks bowties.

Let's just say that my partner in crime had to help me with self control or I would've come home with 2,984,832 bowties and no groceries.

There really isn't a rhyme or reason for this outfit.

I randomly just grabbed odds and ends out of the closet and put them on my body.

Thought that it was better than wearing pajamas to work.

Mission Accomplished.

So I thought...

Until one of my students graciously shared with me that I didn't match.

I looked at HIM for a long time.

Really? That's what you are worried about?

So, you are grading ME now?

Then, I found myself trying to school him on the concept of matching vs. blending...neutral tones, bla bla blah.

Then I caught myself.

Why am I explaining my style choice to someone who is wearing pants down to his ankles and a "I Love Nicky Minaj" t shirt?

(The scarf was more for funtion than for style today.)

GFS Christ Chic: Does Blogging Make You Shop?

I just watched a TJ Maxx/Marshall's commercial and the blogger said that she HAS to shop for new clothes daily because of her blog.

Do you do that?

I don't.

I'm not saying I don't go into Marshall's on Tuesdays and Thursdays religiously because those are their shipment days.

Because I do.

But not because I want to buy to post for my blog.

That's "cray"

(I wore this to church...I felt over dressed. A lady had on spandex leggings and a short shirt. #sigh)

I actually LOVE finding new ways to wear my clothes already in my closet.

The hubby sometimes refuses to take my blog pics.

He'll say "You've worn that skirt before."

Duh!

Of course I have!

That's the point, isn't it?

To figure out new ways to wear old stuff?

I usually just stomp my feet and scream "TAKE THE PICTURE!"

GFS Christ Chic:Manners

Here's another installment of Christ Chic.

(For the new GFS readers...that just means an outfit post on what I wore to church)

I had to set an example to someone in church today.

A lady was sitting next to me in church with an "active" 3 year oldish kid.

He was a terror.

Which is fine...I'm not judging.

She gave him some Cinnamon Toast Crunch from a baggie as a snack.

Which again is fine...because sometimes I sneak Honey Nut Cheerios in for my own snack:)

But he didn't eat it.

He threw it on the floor.

Mind you that this was the first Sunday in our brand NEW building.

Pretty, shiny floors and all.

I waited and waited for her to pick up the cereal.

I thought maybe she was waiting for the choir to finish singing.

Nope.

Oh...she must be waiting for the sermon to be over.

Nah.

Surely she is waiting for the church announcements to be made.

No.

Oh...what is that sound?

That's the sound of her kid CRUNCHING the cereal on the brand new floors with his feet.

And what's all of that over the brand new church seats?

CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH...CRUMBLED!

So now, I'm distracted.

Why won't she pick up the cereal?

I sat there for almost two hours side eyeing the mother...not the kid. The kid doesn't know any better.

The mother does.

She doesn't.

By the time the pastor said his final prayer, I already made the decision that I'm going to pick up the cereal as soon as church as over.

IN FRONT OF HER.

So I did.

What do you think she did?

Right.

She leans over and starts to help as I am hand sweeping the crumbs with my church program.

She said, "Oh thank you but I was going to wait til church was over to get the ushers to grab a broom to get it."

Ummm hmm lady.

Him: Babe, find out how much time is left on your contract and/or how much it is to get out of it.

Me: *looks around*

*stands up*

*my heart literally starts to beat fast*

*mentally digging for the car keys in my pocket*

I literally got a jolt in my spirit! I'm not playing! Then I continued to read...

Him: (email continues) RIM isn’t the business anymore so we need to join Team IPhone. If Sprint isn’t the answer, we can look into Verizon.

He was talking about changing CELL PHONE COMPANIES! I thought he was asking me about my teacher contract and if I could break it! I PROMISE YOU, I THOUGHT THAT!!! LOL!! I got all frazzled and ready at the same time! The sad thing is that I didn't even compute why he would ask me to break the contract! I guess I thought he was going to tell me he won the lottery!

He now knows NEVER to begin a sentence with that phrase!

I'm so embarrassed! LOL

Wacoal Presents...

I was honored Wacoal contacted me to attend their private event to highlight some of their newest undergarments. They promised a free bra fitting and complimentary bra which was a ~~score~~ bonus.

I met my friend Kenge (I forgot to get a pic with her) there which was great because I hadn't seen her since my wedding.

I also ran into Houston stylist, Key.

It was such a great surprise to see Key and her sister.

Her "bag/clutch" game is sick!

The entire Wacoal team was more than gracious and provided us with a personal tour of all the high tech garments that are available in stores now.

I'm a believer in Wacoal bras. I've been wearing them from years but I think I'm going to revisit them because they had undergarments that were just plain pretty and supports all this jelly!

(P.S...The bra specialist took my measurements and I was wearing the correct sized bra. I don't know why I felt so proud of myself)

Thank you Hannah for being the best hostess and Wacoal for my "swag bag."

This is pretty much what went on the whole weekend.

That's what we do.

Juanette and I both wanted to meet any and everyone who wanted to meet us, so we made it simple.

Saturday.

Chicken and Waffles.

Thrift shopping.

Alot more may or may not have happened:)

That's my cousin. He took me in while in Atlanta.

He has great teeth. French is his first language.

Has a good job and enjoys going to "sexy breakfast" spots.

LA LYNN came by to stay hi...and she came with goodie bags for both of us.

She walked up with a wedding gift for me!

AAAAH!!! How sweet is that!

She swung by just to say hi even though she was on her way to feed the homeless!

Antonia also dropped by to say hi!

We ended up kidnapping her for the whole day!

No, seriously, she kept saying that she had to go and we kept begging her to hang with us.

And it worked!

She also led us to Highland Bakery where I finally had a belated birthday cupcake.

So for that, I love ANTONIA!

That's Cherie on the far right. She is the owner and genius behind Nappy Rutz Accessories...and she's in Atlanta! She does jewelry parties and pop up shows all over Atlanta!

When Antonia first approached us, I gave her a hug and instantly started smelling her because she smelled so good! Within 30 seconds, Juanette and I were practically digging in Antonia's purse to try on her SMELL GOODS! LOL! I'm sure Antonia was thinking "that's what they do in Texas??"

(It was a body spray by Degree...YES...Degree the deodorant people!)

I was introduced to the UPTOWN! Half lemonade/Half sweet tea!

We stopped by the Clothes Warehouse in Little 5 Points but we skidaddled out of there...the prices were ridiculous!

We become really focused when we are thrift shopping. It is not a game!

Off we went to a better thrift store, Value Village on Moreland Avenue.

We found our groove in Value Village. The SFAM in us took over and we were showing how thrift finds can work to your advantage. Pushed up sleeves and belts are our strategies of choice!

My cousin hung around for a little bit. I may or may not have forced him. But we may have or may not have allowed him to go to a local strip club while we shopped so he could catch a few football games.

When he came to pick us up, we got him in on the thrifting action! He walked away with a corduroy jacket with elbow patches!

We had a blast!

ATLANTA...The Night When The Food Sucked!

My in-laws also live in Atlanta. So, Juanette and I decided to have a big family dinner where my in laws and her sister/nephews all could get to see us while we were in town.

We went to Paschal's Soul Food Restaraunt.

One word.
HATE.THEM.SO.MUCH!

Fine.

Four words.

We waited about 30 minutes JUST TO GET OUR DRINKS.

We got our darn near cold bread about 15 minutes after drinks. We waited well over an hour for our food.

There was practically no one else in the restaraunt. So WHY SO SLOW!?!

Surely, we thought the wait would be worth it! It had to be, right?!?

NOTTTTTTT!!

The entire table's food arrived cold! (Well, one side of Juanette's chicken was warm)

My Mac & Cheese must have come straight out of the box.

I thought the drought was only in Texas but apparently there was a salt and pepper drought in Paschal's because the food was BLAND!

Now, anybody who knows me knows that I believe in customer service and usually will politely demand it but I was with my in-laws.

I'm not ready to show them how I get down...just yet.

So, I sat and rocked...and rocked...and rocked in my seat like Madea! LOL!

~~Someone at the table said something to the manager.~~

The manager FINALLY had the nerve to check on things and we informed him of our experience.

Ummm...why was he trying to hit on the women at the table!?!?

DOUCHEBAG!

We came here for Soul Food not your crooked tooth smile! GRRR!

THEN...THEN....He asked US, "What should I do in this situation?"

Aren't you the manager?

You didn't take Management classes?

Customer service class?

Haven't you ever been a customer?

By this time, I'm disgusted!

*still rocking like Ol' Ms. Sophia on the Color Purple in the Thanksgiving Dinner table scene*

I replied, "You should do what's fair and appropriate."

What do you think he offers us?

I'll wait...while you think...........

He offered to REFRESH our drinks...that should have already been refreshed an hour ago!

Then he asked if he can have new food brought to the table.

WHY?? Because we like eating at midnight??

No, thank you.

What was his olive branch, you ask?

Complimentary fruit and dessert for the whole table.

*blank stare*

Guess what.
We had to WAIT for that too!

He brought a single plate with a scoop of this and scoop of that...FOR THE WHOLE TABLE!

AS in our table of 8, try to divide a cupcake 8 ways!

Keep in mind...I'm trying to be on my best behavior.

So, I paid the OVERPRICED bill but you best believe that I wrote "all up and through" the receipt.

I was writing sideways...on the back...everywhere!

Juanette had words with him when we were leaving. I'll let her tell you about that exchange if she so chooses.

MORAL of the story...THEY SUCKED!

Now, that I've sufficiently gagged you with enough pics of my outfit...on to one of the MAIN reasons for my going to Atlanta! The hubby gifted me with a trip to ATL for my birthday, so I had to make the best of my short stay.

You may recall that I had a wedding portrait done by Atlanta's own fine artist/illustrator, Shanda Ferguson.

What you don't know is that I've never met her before!

Once, we received the portrait the day before the wedding, I immediately added meeting Shanda on my bucket list. We placed the portrait at the entrance of our wedding venue, so when you walked in...it was the first thing you saw!

The portrait is hands down, my favorite thing in my house!

I've chatted with Shanda several times this year and even cried once on the phone when I got the portrait because I was so overwhelmed by its perfection!

What she doesn't know is how much she's inspired me just by talking about focusing on goals and speaking into existence what I want for my future. I love people who are into inspiring and encouraging others.

NOW, THAT'S THE KIND OF ENERGY I WANT TO SURROUND MYSELF WITH ANY DAY!

I enjoyed every single moment of our meeting at The Flying Biscuit this weekend.

I'm always amazed at people with raw, natural talent and she did not disappoint!

We laughed and giggled like we've know each other for years.
I would gladly accept her into my family, which COULD happen if she ever chooses to...(he he he...inside joke)

Juanette, Cherie (you'll meet her in a future post), Shanda and I had the best time ever!

It was one of the best girl lunch dates I've had in a long time!

And that Juanette...that one is a hoot! I wish I could do a top ten list of the crazy stuff that comes out of her mouth but I'd have to do some heavy editing! LOL! #classic

GFS Series: Christ Chic & Atlanta...Here I Come!

It's been a while since I've done a Christ Chic post huh?

(For the GFS Newbies..."Christ Chic" is just what I wear to church on Sundays:)

I got this dress from the thrift store well over a year ago.

Once upon a time, I couldn't slide it over my hips but I dropped 12 lbs this summer (and counting hopefully) so I decided to debut it at church.

It once had sleeves.

But you know I took care of that with the quickness.

In other news...only a few days until I'm in Atlanta!

I'm so excited that people are willing to come say hi.

Juanette and I have decided to do a "Eat and Thrift" mini blogger meet up with our Atlanta bloggers and readers.

Since we both heart thrifting, it just makes sense to meet at a thrift shop...SFAM style!

I will post the time and place before Thursday of this week once we get the details.

It will be extremely informal and I hope to snag a few thrift goodies and hug everyone!

The heat in Houston has been unbearable. Someone turned the temperature to HELL, so it's been increasingly hard to deal with keeping clothes on after work!

I had a relaxing Labor Day weekend. I hung out with my ~~bestie~~ hubby and finally saw a few movies I've been wanting to see.

Good times. Now I must go back into hiding in case the temperature rises:)

Finally, a real outfit post!

It's been so hot that I've basically resolved to de-clothing (not a real word) as soon as I get in the car.

I even take off my bracelets and earrings because the thought of anything touching my skin in this 100+ degree weather makes me mental.

(I may have or may not have stolen this vintage dress from Juanette's house this summer.)

Well, the dust has settled. The summer is winding down and I have so much to be grateful for.

I had the best wedding I could have and had some truly awakening moments this summer as to who is really on my team and who isn't.

Also, remember that post a few months ago...the one where I lost my job as a teacher because of silly reductions in funding?

Let's just say that since that day, I haven't had one day to be sad about it. I've been blessed in every way. I found a summer job to carry me through the summer and pay for little things for my wedding.

And I got another job! I'm still in education which I'd sworn off but that's what happens when I try to make my own plans and not follow God's plan.

As much as I want to be that creative chick...I still have bills.

So it was a blessing. And I didn't even have to look for a job...it came to me!

Creatively speaking, things keep getting better! Every since my debut as a video wardrobe stylist, I've had more great things come my way.

As soon as I can share, I will!

Things are good and finally falling into place and I couldn't be more appreciative!

P.S... I owe you guys two wedding posts...my take on the "process" (trust me I have alot to say about that!) and a run through of how it went down...it's coming.

Honeymoon: Puerto Reiko (The Final Day)

The last full day in Puerto Reiko (Rico) and we finally made it to the beach.

It was kind of a let down.

It wasn't as picture-esque as I expected.

I believe we went to the wrong part of the beach...on the wrong day...or something.

We told the cab driver to take us to a beach and he swore he was taking us to most beatiful beach ever.

Yeah...for the dead!

In Puerto Rico's defense, it did rain quite a bit because of the threat of Tropical Storm Emily.

And it was a Thursday...so there wasn't much action.

So, that'll be the reason.

We still made the best of it and had our final Puerto Rican adult beverage on the beach and took it all in.

We have decided that each year on our anniversay, we will go back to Puerto Rico.

There's so much that we have yet to discover.

And I kind of like the idea of making that a tradition.

I got my retro style swimsuit from Marshall's, it was made by Jantzen.

I didn't bother taking the skirt off while on the beach because the grim water just wasn't worth it.

I took this picture to show people who are from Texas...Doesn't this water look like the water in Galveston?!? LOL!

The swimsuit did get wet in the hotel pool later that night.

Don't let the picture fool you, I can't not swim!

And that my friends is Puerto Reiko!

Back to real life I go!

GFS Styles Day 2: Lee-Lonn's "Maybe" Video Shoot

When Lee-Lonn had discussions about the treatment for his video, I asked him how he wanted his "girl" to look in the video.

He didn't hesitate. "I want her classy but I don't mind short shorts with the pockets hanging."

And this is what I came up with.

I threw together a boy's shirt, a vintage Gucci belt from my closet and accessories by Yolanda Green of Xpozher Home and Accessories. (Who just so happens to be his mother)

It was a long day and by the end of the day I was spent but that didn't stop us from clowning around when the shoot wrapped!

Don't judge me...I was in work mode!

GFS Styles Day 1: Maybe by LeeLonn Video Shoot

At this point, you atleast know his name because I tweet about him and periodically post about Lee-Lonn.

He is a sensational artist and I just happen to know him personally.

Roughly 2 months ago, he asked me to be the stylist for his first video and it couldn't have come at a better time.

I think the day before, I'd just receive the news that I was being layed off from my job.

I was in charge of super sweet video model Ashley's look as well as Lee-Lonn's look.

Toni of Scott Phree Online Boutique allowed us to pull from her inventory! Toni, former stylist to the stars, was so accomodating and gracious and gave me free reign on what we could use!

Here are a few studio shots I took with my camera.

We decided on this embellished dress for Ashley and she rocked it!

With the help of make-up artist, Danielle...we came up with this look for Ashley.

I die for LeeLonn.

He is such an artist.

But even better...he's an INCREDIBLE human being!

He lets me boss him around...stylishly speaking of course!

Honeymoon: Puerto Reiko (Part 2)

To be honest, we just wandered around Old San Juan and ran into things to do/see.

We were so relaxed (probably because of the marathon random naps)...that we just flew by the seat of our pants.

We did make it to the Bacardi factory...which was kind of underwhelming but they give free Rum when you arrive...so that's something.

I was more interested in the history of the company but it was a free tour...so no complaints here.

Do you know why the bat is the symbol for Bacardi Rum?

It's because the founder's wife noticed fruit bats in the warehouse where the rum was being fermented.

I was listening to the tour guide...yes I was.

We once again lucked up on Fort San Christobal on the other side of the island.

I wasn't prepared for the inclines in Old San Juan. I'm smiling in this picture but my calves and heart were betraying me.

The night before we went to Plazas de America (the mall) and I picked up this little romper from F21. I foolishly packed only dresses so I had to go pick up some pants for the hike around the city.

The threat of Tropical Storm Emily forced the sun into hiding most of the trip but it was beautiful in Puerto Rico nonetheless.

Just some dudes playing a game of dominoes in the middle of the day...on a Wednesday.

You are looking at the mime...the street performer, aren't you?

Not me...I zoned in on the Marshall's bag in the background.

That meant there was a Marshall's nearby.

It was behind me when I took this picture.

I didn't go in.

But I slept better that night knowing that there was a Marshall's near me!

The Honeymoon: Puerto REIKO (Part 1)

Let me start by admitting that the first day we landed in Puerto Rico, we slept for about 13 hours straight. So let's just say these pics were taken in between naps.

We slept like we were in competition!

Here are random shots we took when we decided to awake from our self induced comas:)

We also were in Puerto REIKO (notice the name change)...during the threat of Tropical Storm Emily.

Emily wasn't a real threat but there was rain the whole week and the wind was strong enough to give me a new a hairstyle:)

Outside of the second oldest church...or something the locals were trying to tell us.

We randomly spotted this fort/castle "Fort San Felipe del Morro" on the coast and decided to head that way!

I'm kind of a secret history buff so I was quite intrigued with the story behind Puerto Rico:)

The Wedding Gear

I got this dress maybe a month before the wedding off the clearance rack at Dillard's.

I think I paid $106 with tax.

I kind of had another dress but at the last minute, decided to see what else was out there.

This dress was absolutely what I needed...Short and Sassy!

Juanette let me borrow her much coveted crinoline to give it some fullness and voila...a wedding dress was born!

(Sorry for the bathroom shots...I hate those...but they will have to do)

I get alot of questions about what kind of strapless bra I wear all of the time...so I thought I would let you see it.

I love this particular brand of bras because I'm top heavy and I need support but I don't need extra padding.

I get these bras from Macy's.

The brand is Lilyette.

(I'm obsessed with bangles. I found these bangles at Aldo Accessories)

I wore both shoes...I wore the Leopard LAMB heels most of the day and switched into the pink Steve Madden heels for the last few hours because they had a lower heel:)

(We were super non-traditional in the sense that we saw each other before the wedding...and might have even had a drink or two...to calm our nerves of course:)

One thing we both knew is that we both wanted to look the most like ourselves.

The hubby wears bowties regularly and I wear leopard print shoes just to go to the mail box, so we were determined to be us!

The whole feel of our wedding was laid back so a suit wasn't right.

2 or 3 weeks before the wedding, we went to Zara's and found everything he needed...ON SALE!

The vest was about $23 and the matching pants were under $50.

We all know I love tailored clothing, so his pants were altered for the perfect fit.

He has TONS of bowties but we found the red bowtie at Marshall's for $10.

The custom Chucks were the biggest expense for him but they were worth every penny ($88).

He went to the Converse website a few months ago and designed the colors and had them customized with our names on the side.

They were perfect!

As you can tell, we were not trying to go into debt over our wedding gear. But I loved every piece of both of our outfits!

(I'm taking a slight break from wedding pics/posts to tell you about something HUGE)

Do you remember earlier this summer, I kept saying that I was working on a project?

An Epic project!

Now I can finally say it!

I was the wardrobe stylist for singer Lee-Lonn's first video "Maybe!"

(P.S...he sang this song at my wedding too:)

I was in charge of the looks for the video model and Lee-Lonn!

It was a two day shoot and I had the most fun EVER.

EVER!

The video release party is next week and I can't wait to see the finished product!
