GFS Diva Style Advice: Part "Finally!"

I haven't done a GFS Diva Style post in a while...well because no one has asked me. Cathy from The Minister of Style blog contacted me to confess a cardinal sin. She had a kimono hanging in her closet not being used to its potential! What the What!?!

Cathy's Kimono Collection
So Cathy,  the Minister of Style...by the way wouldn't you go to church more often if your minister had a little style in the pulpit although it would be a distraction because I would sit there thinking that I need those shoes or that dress...I digress...  asked for ideas on how to rock the kimono. Nothing revolutionary here but here goes!

1. Think outside of the box...wear it outside of the house. Why waste all of that fabulousness sitting around the house? Not that I'm judging but a kimono is instantly chic. Somebody should see it...even it is that pimply faced kid sacking  your groceries at the supermarket!

2. Play with the length of it. If you thrifted a kimono, there is no harm in altering the hem line. Depending on your height, a shorter length might be ideal. Throwing on a contrasting belt can also make all the difference in the world.  I had this purple one altered because there were stains at the bottom so I just had it cut. I have quite the collection of kimonos now, all thrifted of course.
3. Wear it is a jacket/cover up. Using it as a lightweight jacket/cover up is always an option. Find a solid sheath (or anything semi fitted), grab some accessories, throw on some heels...and step honey...step like you are going somewhere important!

So here are the rules Cathy. You take my pointers and run like the wind! My only request is that you have to send me a pic(s) of you rocking the kimono so I can sleep at night:) I will post the update in a new post!

Let me stress that I am really not one for rules when it comes to style...just know what flatters you and makes you feel good...most of all, whatever you do...pay close attention to fit. Whether it's a vintage find or from a shi-shi-fu-fu store...pay attention to how your clothes hang on you!

Email me if you have a question to go in the next edition of GFS Style Advice!
If no other reason...do it to keep me busy...I'm getting bored!

Good post. I had a kimono shortened to waist length and wear it as a jacket with jeans and whatever else. They are instant chic pieces to have.

Great advice, girlie. +D

To play with volume, I wear a wide belt and tuck the bottom under. Makes for an interesting drape effect.

Love the purple kimono look. Great advice for Cathy. You need your own show on the Oprah XM satellite radio thingy where you talk about fashion.

See why you gotta call me out like that, LOL. I didn't know the potential of the kimono until I read your blog. I think I will shorten the cotton one but the royal blue one is from Japan, so I want to keep it as it is. Seriously girl, you did a fabulous job styling it and you can best believe pics will follow as soon as I rock it. Thank you so much!!!!

I agree there are lots of options with a kimono. I might have to look for one while I'm out thrifting. That is one thing that I don't have in my closet.

You make me want to try harder.
Basically, since being in an accident and gaining weight out the WAZOO, all I wear is black. Black shirts. Black skirts. Black pants.

I feel sad about my clothes choices. I just feel defeated in this area of my life right now. You give me hope though. And you always, always make me smile.

Thank you for that! Hope your weekend is ultra fab!

How come I never find kimonos when I'm thrifting?!

Next time you're in Austin, I hope you go to Bitchin' Threads. There are 2 consignment shops in the same little strip mall and both are awesome, but Bitchin' Threads has the sickest collection of vintage and newwer kimnonos ever!!!

I wish I had the ability to thrift. The purple and gold kimono are great finds; unfortunately after looking at the rack closest to the entrace, I find my patience leaving and it's over for me.

i don't have any ACTUAL kimonos, but the kimono dress cut is pretty much the most flattering cut for me. i am always on the lookout for more! i scored a fab one on ebay last week for twenty bucks and it is FANTASTIC! the perfect cut/shape to emphasize the good and deeeeeeeeee-mphasize the bad! and that is always the goal! ahahhaha

Great post! Kimonos may be the one item of clothing that I'm scared of! I'm always afraid that I will look like I'm drowning in one. But this gives me hope!

Well, I have a question? I'm actually pretty good at answering style questions but here's one I'm not sure about. Are there any rules when dressing over 30. I don't really go by rules, but sometimes I'll give second thought to an outfit thinking it may be too young, but I want to rock it. For example, I want to rock a midriff top in an off-the-shoulders-eighties type of way. How do I go about this without looking like my 19 year old sister? I'm thinking a body suit underneath, but let me know what you think?? I know I def can't get away with it bare belly (or maybe I can???...lol)
