The Art of Living and Learning

This will be a quick post before I'm off to work on an awesome styling project.

If you're my twitter friend then you know what it's all about. I'll be able to do an official post about it once the dust has settled.
It's officially the end of a school year for me and the beginning of the unknown. (Remember this post)

But oddly, it's the most exciting for me.
I have a feeling that this is the year of changes for me and I can't be happier about it.

In other random news: Here are a few things that as an educator, I feel obligated to share with any parents out there.

Please take the time to do the following because it's now a lost art:

1. Teach your child how to count change.
2. Teach your child how to tell time on an analog clock. (I taught middle school and very few knew the time if it wasn't on their cell phones/computers...that irks my soul!)
3. Take your child to the library. A real library and teach the art of looking for a book. (NOT GOOGLE!)
4. Teach your child how to properly address a letter! OH MY GOD! I witnessed a 10th grader not have a clue how to format an envelope! WHAT!?!?
5. Teach your child how to use a dictionary!
6. Teach your child how to FILE in alphabetical order. PLEASE! Something so basic to us, is foreign to them. I had a high school kid NOT know that you are supposed to file by last name first. WHAT?!?

(I thrifted this Polo Shirt, It was a XXL. I just cut the neck out to make it a slouchy top. It's thin and light and I LOVE IT!

I say this out of love because as a teacher, alot of this is not required to teach anymore but that doesn't mean the parents shouldn't.

PS...Happy Birthday Ashley of Mocha Mommies! I had a blast at dinner last night. And Hi to Keisha, who I found out reads my blog but was too shy to say hi! HI GIRL! Now you see, I really am a hot southern mess too!

This wasn't a quick post whatsoever, was it? Hmpph.

Great Post.. My daughter is going into the 4th grade and just yesterday I had her handle my transaction at the store so she can learn about counting change. This is must read for all parents!!

I'm not a parent but I completely agree with everything you said! And, when I do become a parent, I will definitely make sure my kids learn all those things and more (you know...the old fashioned way)! :)

I'm not a parent, but I am saddened and concerned that children aren't learning what I thought were basic life skills...

I will be sure to remember to teach these simple skills to my future children and to children I mentor now. We need to wake up and help these children because they are the future!

Your whole look is fab as usual!

I will add some of these things to our summer to do list : )

Co-sign on #1-6, especially #2! I'm not even a math teacher, and I can't tell you how irritating it is that my students don't know how to tell the time 'like that'. And don't cover the clock; it makes them go crazy, lol!

Cute outfit, love the clutch and as a teacher myself, I COMPLETELY agree! One thing I'd like to add to that list if you don't mind me saying, is parents please teach your children how to properly address an adult and those in positions of authority. That's all..great post!

HAHAHAHA!!! I usually just stalk around but I had to say HI Again!!! LOL... It was just surreal to see you guys in person. Oh & I so agree with everything you are saying on this post. I think it should be added to teach them early, buy puzzles and developmental games, it makes a Big difference.

This made me laugh while nodding my head so much my neck hurts! Most of my staff are 20-30 and they are extremely bright and tech savvy. However, they didn't know that filing alphabetically is usually last name first or how to format a letter to customers without assistance. I also have to explain every summer why they can't wear shorts to work when the sun is out. It makes me tired and confused. It's nice to know someone understands.

Now I seriously want a fitted skirt and crop top to show off my long legs you adore, lolol. Does a quick shout (dance for those who dont' know) after reading this. It irks me to know end when I see all of these things. As little money as we make I will always have a job because there will always be 100+ students in each grade level needing a reading teacher. Can I add to the list to? Parents, technology doesn't make your kid smart. Copying a report from Google is plagiarism. Please teach them how to do research! Love ya Reiko!!

WHAT!!!?? Wait a min Shut-UP....you did a successful DIY?!!? Haha I kid girl. That newly slouched striped Tee looks hella hot on you :)

And this generation of kids are reDUNK! Those things you mention are not in the least bit funny, just downright sad. They were all shocking, but I was prob especially shocked by some high school kids not comprehending the alpha order thing......like REALLY??

Anywho, this comment is officially an essay now. But I just had to at least tell you Congrats + good luck on your new stylist and whatever-you're-not-allowed-to-share-yet venture!!!! It was just a few months ago we first met and you were talking about how you'd like to do....well....what you're doing/about to do now :)

xo,
raven

If I ever have kids I shall remember your wise words. Though who needs a library when there is wikipedia?
I kid, don't hate...:)
All the best in this next, uncertain but exciting chapter of your life!

Let me raise my hands and say, "Amen!"
I am a middle school Reading/Lang Arts teacher (in Houston, too!), and I could not agree with you more on items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6...(wait, that's ALL of them!)...
On another note, I love your attitude about bringing personal style that is not that of the stereotypical teacher (or school marm) to the classroom!

so exciting!! ...love you in stripes!!

And yes! To the list of what to teach your children.

You said something lady! These microwave kids don't know how to do much of anything these days and take most things for granted and believe the world owes them sometehing. Amazingly my kids now 18 and 21 know how to do these things on your list.
