GFS in New Orleans: WWJD

I bet you think by now that I just pick up and go to New Orleans and Austin and parts of the country whenever I feel like it. Not so Grasshopper:)

I was in New Orleans for a friend's wedding. I wore this ensemble to the wedding. I had a conversation with Juanette and I told her how I wanted to "J. Crew" my look.

( I got this long sash from Goodwill. It's nice & long and wraps around my body a couple of times)

I am really obsessed with the style director guru responsible for the wonders of J. Crew.
Juanette and I now have a saying when we want to J. Crew our look...WWJD!

WWJD SHOULD stand for What Would Jesus Do.
Again, you are wrong grasshopper.
It stands for What Would JENNA (Lyons) Do?!?

(Brian the photographer for Kendi Everyday told me that night time photos aren't the best...and I agree...yet I keep trying. Fail.)
I decided that this thrifted mermaid style skirt should be accompanied with a Target Tank and J. Crew "like" jewelry. Juanette loaned me her necklace (she sells awesome jewelry) and bag.

I keep waiting for her to call me and say just keep the bag. I'm still waiting...but I'm not giving up.

I have a final New Orleans post coming up and then I get to share the photos from The Houston Blogger Meet UP...which was all kinds of AWESOME!

GFS Feature: Christ Chic and Forgiveness

I went to church today.

(Thrifted Trench, Thrifted American Eagle Dress)

But I think the devil was trying to distract me. Everytime I would just about bow my head in prayer, I would catch a glimpse of a furcoat walking down the aisle! IN 70 DEGREE WEATHER!?!? I promise you Texans just can't wait for even a cool breeze.  I counted 4 fur coats just before the sermon.

The choir helped me regain my composure though. But even that was ruined.  My vision was acosted by atleast three lace front weaves on children in the choir stand. It is NOT okay to allow your kid to look like a real life Cabbage Patch KID!

I made it through the sermon though. It took a second for me to get ahold of myself but I did it. It was about forgiveness. Forgiveness of all kinds. Forgiveness to people who do you wrong. Forgiveness of family grudges. Forgive those who don't even deserve it. Because it frees you.

(Pour La Victoire "Irina" heels, Jones NY scarf, random fabric that I forced to be a clutch:)

Then I walk out after church and saw what had to be a seven year old girl wearing black knee boots WITH A HEEL!

I DO NOT FORGIVE THAT.

(I made a quick shoe/purse change to run errands)

Next Sunday, I'm not wearing my contacts. It's better for everyone involved.
(Converse, Vintage Louis Vuitton Sac Plat)

Not for the Faint of Heart

Give a girl the choice to thrift or eat for lunch...which do you think I chose? Exactly. Thrifting!
I copped this boys jacket. The minute I saw it, I knew it was something that JJ would have worn on Good Times. You know that thought alone sold me!
(I do not own these other items...just giving you a visual)
Pour La Victoire Heels, Etsy Vintage Clutch, American Apparel Skirt

I can't describe the fabness of this jacket. It's vintage, light wool and fitted. It is awesome and sadly I must part with it because apparently I couldn't convince my boobs to shrink on demand. Sad face. Before I have to part with it, I thought I would style it up a bit. It really could go with anything...wide legged jeans...skinny jeans and boots...pencil skirt. The possibilities are endless.

Then I saw this dress. It's ugly, right...but that's what makes it fabulous! When I saw it, I knew the solution was to remove the sleeves and voila...a fab dress appears! I'll admit, the jacket and this dress aren't to be worn by "wusses". It's for the fashion gangstas. It's for the chick that dares anyone to tell her that fly collared jackets and Hawaiian print fitted mumu's aren't fashion forward. It's for people like me:)

I just pinned the arms back but doesn't it make a world of difference!?!
Cinch the waist with a belt...and BAM!

I styled it up for you. All those flowers and patterns needed to be anchored with some black basic classics.
(Chloe Nancy Clutch, Blue Fly Jacket, Pour La Victoire Ankle Boots)
You like?

I'll do an outfit post soon...I've just been to lazy too take pics after work:)

Cold Front...Please?

I am so looking forward to the Fall! But, I live in Texas where heat is pretty much year round. The thermostat read 107 degrees in my car today...it was only 7, 8, 9 okay...10am! To be honest, I really am just looking forward to wearing this coatdress and closed toe shoes again. All I need is one good constant breeze for me to bust it out. That's it...just a hint of a breeze and I'm going straight Tyra Banks in it! Right now though, all I can do is sit on the edge of my bed and stare at it and think of all the places I can go in it.
Here is my list of those places thus far...

1. To work
2. Church
3. To the lottery office where I will turn in my winning lottery ticket and then ultimately drop off the face of the earth.
4...still thinking about #3

Like I said...I can't wait for Fall:)

One Whole Dolla

Remember that shopping ban that I may have or may have not put myself on? If I bought this dress for a dollar, does that really count? I mean really. One whole dolla? You be the judge! The dress is a tad too big and a tad too long but it was nothing a belt couldn't fix.

I have really been into the Ralph Lauren Spring 2010 look. That whole "housewife during the Dustbowl era with heels" look really appeals to me for some reason. This dress reminds me of the uniform my mom wore when she was a waitress when I was about 5 or 6 years old. She worked at Sambo (what a name)...it was basically a Denny's...I think. I remember she had to wear a uniform and it looked alot like this.
That's amazing that I remember that because I can't even remember what I ate for breakfast! I have the worst time remembering people I went to high school with and I have the nerve to remember where my mother worked when I was 5? Since I'm reminiscing...I also remember one time my mom dropped me and my brother off at elementary school and the car caught on fire when we got there!

(By the way...the season finales of Grey's Anatomy and The Good Wife have me freaking out!!)

GFS Meets Austin, Texas!

This weekend I had to take a day trip to Austin, Texas. I had to take a stupid test to prove how smart I am. Apparently even after one gets a Master's Degree, you are still considered stupid until you take another stupid test. (Can you detect the venom?)
Anyway, thanks to my great blog/twitter friend Kellyssima who also happens to make jewelry in Austin...I got the heads up on a few great vintage stores to check out!
I checked out Blue Velvet Vintage Store and I am so glad that I did! They had fab clothes and truly vintage, not just old people stuff! Some of the stuff was costumey but I was overall beyond satisfied...as in EVERY SINGLE TIME I GO BACK TO AUSTIN, I MUST GO THERE!
The rainbow bright colored hooker boots were a bit much but I'm pretty sure some hooker in Austin is on her way right now to grab them:) No judgement though.
Here is the sweet chick that checked me out. She was very patient as I tried to get discounts off discounts! She told me she was from Houston but moved to Austin when she and her hubby both got accepted the University of Texas. The other smiley lady...just a customer who wanted to take a picture I guess??
Believe it or not, I didn't go crazy. I got three items I loved...A fitted vintage Neiman Marcus blazer, a 70's plaid shirt perfect for Spring....AND............A 70'S CAFTAN THAT EVEN DIANA ROSS WOULD SLAP ME FOR!  Let just put it this way...Nicole Richie is mad that I have the dress and not her! I can't wait to show you! It makes me giggle just thinking about it!!

Oh yeah...I fell on my butt on the way to take that stupid test too...Yes, I fell again!
I'll tell you about that later this week.

Not for nothing...I hiked a little mini mountain in Austin and found this couple sitting on the edge of the cliff singing from what I assume was a hymn book? It was very odd but they were singing their little hearts out. They would sing in unison and then smile and gaze at each other. I was like WTH?? I kept waiting for them to jump together or something! I kept looking around to see if anyone else was phased by this scene but not so much. I had to sneak a picture. They were either singing to God or the Devil, I'm not sure but they were in tune nonetheless!

Black Out Challenge...THE FINALE'!

(My Equestrian Look: Thrifted Ralph lauren Vest, Super old jeans, Thrifted Boots, H&M Shirt)
I made it! I did it! I managed to avoid wearing black for an entire week. Actually, a little more than a week. I am so proud of myself. I was able to dig out some clothes from the deep corners of my closet and add color to my life! As we speak, I am sitting alone, stroking my black leggings and singing to all of my black blazers. I've missed them!
(Not the grandest outifit to end the challenge but it satisfied the requirements. This pic was taken at the end of the day. I was so exhausted)

Meet "Christopher"...one of my students.

My Thrifting Coupe de Grace (Part 3)

Okay, boys and girls, this is it. These are my last few GFS thrifting tips. It's not rocket science really, you just have to possess an "obsessive" gene in your body. I've had to stop thrifting for a minute because I believe an old, rich Jewish woman recognized her shoes on my feet a few weeks ago. ( just kidding..she was Asian:)
For you slackers...click here for Tips 1-5.
And click here for Tips 6-10

11. Don't forget to look for accessories. Retro/Vintage/interesting belts can transform a simple dress.

(This is hands down my all time favorite thrifted belt! I wear it with everything...clearly)

12. This sounds like a joke but be in the MOOD to thrift. If you are having a bad day or rushing, you will never find anything.

13. Find a few places that you really like and pop in during the week. I find most of my gems on Tues and Wed after work as opposed to the weekend. That's how I got a ReAL Louis Vuitton for 50 bucks. I was there browsing on a random Tuesday and saw the manager put it on the shelf. I snatched it smooth out of her hands! {evil laugh appropriate here}

14. I hate this rule but...try on EVERYTHING! Most thrift places don't allow returns.

15. Find alternate ways to wear the obvious. (I thrifted a 3 buck cape that I can wear as a cape or as a wrap skirt...I'll post pics later.)

(This is indeed a daishiki my friends...JJ from Good Times is not the only person who can rock it)

16. When you see something that you know is worth it
. GET IT. Never assume that it will be there later. And make sure you love what you buy!

Now, can someone PLEASE share with me how to become wealthy rather quickly doing something that doesn't involve selling crack cocaine or pulling an all nighter while wearing nothing more than fishnet stockings and clear glass heels on Main Street? I'm taking serious suggestions only since THIS PLAN clearly isn't going to happen because a certain "somebody" decided to end her show soon! Oprah is so selfish!

Oh, I'm not above the fishnet and clear heels option but I would never sell crack cocaine.
(by the way...please press your humor button when you read my blog)
Pray for me! LOL
