Christ Chic: Moments Like These

The hubby just returned from a business trip to Scotland.
He shared the story of one of his coworkers and the story was just too moving for me not to share with you.
His coworker was a self proclaimed agnostic.
(Stating facts...no judgement here:)
The coworker, let's call him Peter, told the hubby that he had an important event when they returned to Houston.

(Goodwill Dress, Steve Madden Heels, Zara Trench)

He was going to have his 1st Communion.
The hubby laughed it off  (insert my fist) until he realized that Peter was serious.
Apparently, Peter went to Rome last year and of course he had to visit the Vatican.
I know I would.

Peter said he walked into the Vatican and for reasons unknown to him...he fell to his knees.
He said he didn't expect it.
He later recalls the moment as God literally knocking him in the head.
Today, Peter is enjoying his First Communion.

I'm not Catholic.
And I'm not trying to convert you.
Really, the message is for me.
I went to church today and didn't get anything out of the message.
(That happens sometimes)
But the story of Peter, my hubby's coworker, moved my spirit.

The fact that he didn't believe...had no intentions on believing...and just like that, his whole world changed.
That's proof enough for me.
I'm sending a "1st Communion" card to Peter.
Something so miraculous deserves to be acknowledged.
Forever 21 Necklace

(Keep in mind that my husband is telling me the story so I'm positive important details were left out. Peter may have had cinnamon pecan pancakes with the Pope and that was left out of the story!)

If you're not into the message, at least enjoy my dress from Goodwill. It's one of my favorite finds.
Plus, I'm carrying the American Apparel "inspired" Reiko Red clutch that was named after me by DIY Raven earlier this year. She closed down her shop though:(

For my new followers, my Christ Chic posts are usually just what I wear to church:)

Someone Stop The World

(Excuse the *moistivity in my face. I'm in Houston, where even the sun breaks a sweat)

If anyone ever asks you who my favorite singers are (what? It could happen:), I hope you know to tell them *Jill Scott and Maxwell.
Last night, I got to see both  Jill and Maxipoo (my pet name for him)  on the same stage last night. It was awesome. I've seen Jill perform live maybe 6 times already and Maxwell I've seen maybe 4 times? (I even snuck into one of his concerts long time ago, ssshhh). I. Love. Him and Her...LOVE. Most people who know me will probably say that I'm laid back and quiet and observant but those people have never seen me mad or at a Maxwell concert. All bets are off baby. I scream like he can hear me. I scream. I scream. And I scream some more. I really don't know what screaming does for anyone at concerts but I find myself doing a lot of screaming at Maxwell concerts.
I think I may have also waved my hand a couple of times like I was praising Jesus. I think at that point, I made a mental note to scream really loud for Jesus at church on Sunday.  If I can scream that loud for a man who has never met me or done a thing for me, then certainly I can eek out a holla  for Jesus on Sunday. Commitment made:)
I saw alot of outfit nightmares travesties at the concert. I wish this was a blog that takes potshots at people in their nightmarish get ups but I am way  too "classy" for that. (Not really)
I'll be honest, I built this whole ensemble around the sleeves on my vintage jacket (Thanks to Goodwill). I may have even screamed when I grabbed it. Notice a pattern? Things I love= Makes me scream.
(Thanks to the "fella"/sponsor/bf for the tickets:)
(Of course, I had to show you a poor concert pic that I took at the concert. If you don't know who Jill Scott or Maxwell is...get to know them)

Things you should know:
*Moistivity- not a real word:)
** The title of today's post "Someone Stop The World" is the title of one of Maxwell's songs.
*** Janet Jackson is my all time favorite performer...even if she can't quite move like she used to. I'm loyal**
****I don't always scream at concerts, sometimes I break into routines (click here)

Who would make you scream at a concert??

Never Say Never

I hate when people make me go back on my word. I never thought that I would be wearing denim with denim. But here I am rocking the look. I still kinda loathe certain washes of denim together but atleast I'm coming around. Here is my version of the double denim trend.  I wore something a little different to work but my date insisted asked that I stuff my face with sushi for dinner with him...so this is what I threw together.
I go through phases with my clothes. I'll be really into something and do it to death and then I'm over it. A few years ago, I was all about the fedora and had to have one in every color. Once the phase was over, it's over. For some reason, I'm back into hats again so I dug this hat (a la' Kyla) out of the closet.
Here is a conversation I had with one of my female students today. I teach high school.

Student: Ms. G, why is your shirt buttoned up so high?
Me: *blank stare* Ummm, because I'm at work?
Student: Yea, but can you atleast unbutton one more button?
Me: Boo, if I did that your Papi' would be calling me Mami'.
Student: Huh?
Me: Never mind. Don't worry about my clothes!

Fedora: (old...from a vintage shop I think)
Denim Shirt: Goodwill $3
Belt/Paperbag skirt: Target
Shoes: Pour La Victoire
Louis Vuitton Sac Plat
Earrings: F21
Bracelet: Urban Outfitters

(Here is my inspiration for today's outfit: Ralph Lauren Spring 2010 Collection)

What is something you swore you would NEVER wear but find yourself atleast "leaning" in that direction again?

For me, it's double denim. I draw the line at Jellies and Crocs. That will never happen...EVERRRRRRR!!!!!!

I've Changed...Really

If you are new to this blog, then you don't know that I have an affinity for kimonos. It's my life's mission to own every kimono in the South:) I may have even threatened a blog diva or two if I see them rocking a kimono that really should be on my body. I guess I should take this time to apologize to Jane from Sea of Shoes (click here).  But I've changed. I have been rehabilitated.  I'm not like that anymore. I promise. I haven't beat anyone down in over a week for wearing something that I should be wearing. God is real people. God is real! HA HA!!
(Vintage Kimono, Goodwill Belt, Kate Spade Shoes)
I instead think I've quenched my thirst for the ultimate kimono/jacket/dress with this little vintage number! I've had it a few months now...just hadn't gotten around to wearing it. What better day to rock a kimono than on Cinco De Mayo! Can you believe it was only 6 bucks! The resale shop was trying to sell it for 60 but let's just say that I worked my jelly:)
I'll let the kimono speak for itself. Can it be anymore perfect? And it gave me a reason to wear my favorite pair of red Kate Spade shoes!
I wore this to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I celebrated by learning about the history of Cinco De Mayo and volunteering. Okay......I had a Margarita and stuffed my face with empanadas and queso dip.  Don't judge me. I'm thinking I'm going to make this little outfit work appropriate by throwing on some black slacks or my purple pencil skirt underneath. The split is a little too "risky" for the children at the school house.
By the way, I'm feeling better than earlier this week. I'm about at 93% now!
Random note: My students are reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins...OMG, I am hooked! This book is awesome. It has me sucked in like the Twilight books but it has NOTHING to do with Vampires! I highly recommend this book for those adults that aren't ashamed to read a teen book...it's really good:)

Trying Something New!

Photos from Style.com

First of all, I am still feeling the effects of the blog love from being the Feature at SITS.com yesterday! I have already made new blogfriends! Believe it or not...but believe it...I really did read every one of your comments!
Back to business, I've noticed the new trend in some of the magazines that I check out from my school library (a girl knows when to save her money!) is mixing patterns. I was looking through some DKNY and Kate Spade ads and knew that I could easily pull off these looks for less. I love what I came up with!
This is sorta how that conversation went...
Self: You totally can rock this look with what you have in your closet already.
My other self: Yeah, I really can, can't I?!?
Self: Girl, yes. You don't have to spend $675 on a red trench coat from Kate Spade! You already have one hanging in your closet from 5 years ago.
My Other Self: I sure do!
Self: Yep, and you remember you just bought a polka dot dress from Goodwill a few months ago.
My Other Self: I love that dress.
Self: So why don't you go shop in your own closet and show those magazines models that real girls can rock the runway look too!
My Other Self: You are so Smart!
Self: I am, aren't I? I get that alot!
.......end scene........:)
P.S...Thank you to Cane Wife for my blog award!

I did a darn good job, didn't I!?!

I FINALLY MET OPRAH!!!

Well not exactly...okay... not even close but I'm one step closer to being a success story on Oprah. I have been featured on Mustard Seed Collective's blog! I am so excited. It's not a big deal to you, but it's a big deal to me. It means that someone other than my family reads my blog!

Here I thought my sister and friends were the only ones who read my blog...and by "read"...I mean look at the pictures only! (cough, cough)

Click here and read my little interview! This could be the first step to me getting out of debt.
Here is my Plan!
1. Be featured on Mustard Seed Collective website.
2. Gayle (Oprah's BFF) is surfing the net and stumbles upon my feature.
3. Gayle tells Oprah that she has got to read God's Favorite Shoes blog!
4. Oprah sends for me to talk clothes.
5. When I get there Oprah will surprise me with a book publishing deal or a job on her O' Magazine writing staff.
(Remember, this is all in my head, none of this is real...yet)
5. I will be so funny, cute and witty that she will invite me for different segments on the show.
6. Oprah will ask me to be in her "inner circle" with Gayle, Andre the hairdresser, Nate the design guru and Stedman!
And BAM! I made it!!!! It could happen!

So thank you Adrienne at MUSTARD SEED COLLECTIVE...you are my first step in that direction!!

Just Kidding...unless you are OPRAH...then I am serious as a heart attack!
But really, go check out the feature! This is my First Feature! I. AM. SOMEBODY! (Thank you Jesse Jackson!!)

Thrifted Jacket/Belt
Anthropologie Summer Dress
Jessica Simpson Shoes
Marshall's Textured Tights
What a difference tights make! These babies are going to help transition my summer clothes into the fall!

Textured Tights from Marshall's. And I promise to stop wearing these shoes!

Click here and Go Check out my Feature! Then come back and tell me what you think!

Are you are a follower of mine yet? You should be! I'm going places! (going a little far with this feature thing huh?!?)

Quick! Help Me Decide!

Update: I wore the black dress to the wedding. I know, I know...Everyone chose the blueish/greenish one but I felt better in the black dress. A little more zexy and the temperature dropped at night:)
The bride even called me the next morning to tell me I looked beautiful...(hey, I'm supposed to call her to say that!)...so all is well! Thanks for the votes. I promise to listen to you next time. (I did wear the blue dress to work with black tights though, so all is not lost:) Thanks again!
________________________________________________

Quick! Help me choose a dress! I am going to a wedding tomorrow and I can't decide which one I want to wear! The stats of the wedding are that it's at 5pm and there will be alot of Salsa and Merengue going on at the reception:) Which one should I wear?

Dress: H&M Philly (seen here) I got this long time ago. Basically it was a free dress.
Belts: Thrifted (I'm totally obsessed w/ gold belts these days)

Dress: Goodwill (but altered...seen here)
Jewelry: My Late Aunt's Vintage Chanel Earring (on necklace) and Purse!
Belt: Thrifted
"Boyfriend" Blazer: Donna Karen Jacket (thrifted $3)
(by the way I am totally into "boyfriend jackets"...may do a post later about them)
Chanel Sunglasses: FOUND IN THE GROCERY STORE THE OTHER DAY...( found as in they were just laying there at the meat counter. I asked the deli guy if they were anyone's and he said "Take em' child"...THey're totally real!)
Shoes: Jessica Simpson vis Marshall's

WHICH ONE DO I WEAR? The Green Dress or Black? Hurry...Leave a comment and help me! I have 23 hours from this very second to decide!

My camera work is not that great...sorry

I Hate Stripes...

I hate wearing stripes but I wore them anyway. I'm trying to find ways to let go of all these rules that I've force myself to follow all these years...except wearing CROCS...I WILL NEVER ROCK CROCS!!! I would rather skin the bottom of my feet with a dull contaminated razor from the days of slavery and walk barefoot over the heads of 12 porcupines than wear CROCS! (do you get the picture now?) LOL

At any rate, here is just an in between time post until I have something super earthshattering to share.

Dress: Calvin Klein Sheath via Marshall's (2 years ago?)
Shoes: Nine West via Marshall's (last year perhaps?)
Necklace: F21
Bracelet: Gift from my Sister
Belt/purse/Cardigan: Thrifted
This isn't an especially postworthy outfit, I feel pretty ordinary in it..can't be fly all of the time, now can I? :)
I'll just call it my "professional" look so that I don't bang my head against the wall for finally accepting that I am getting older! Michelle Obama would approve of this ensemble though, don't you think? I am gonna have to rock my Prince t shirt and Skinny jeans soon, so I can feel cool again:)
I'll spice it up for the rest of the week. Let's call this a Mundane Monday Outfit Post:)
